( he was calling her bluff, and sif couldn't really be surprised.
maybe she'd known all along that loki couldn't resist a challenge and that was why she'd challenged him. but that would mean admitting that a part of her wanted this and wanted to be here - and that was something she could never do. at least, not yet. better to chalk it up to a poor decision in the heat of the moment and be done with it, and make whatever excuses she needed to in order to rationalize it.
after all -- his implication had been that something would most definitely be happening, but here she was at the docks of all places, because he had something to show her. it didn't compute, not for her.
the night air was chilly and she clutched her cloak around her a bit more securely, peering in the darkness and refusing to call out - refusing to make it seem like she was concerned to be waiting for him alone, or that she was even anticipating his coming in the slightest. what if someone saw? what if... )
[He was calling her bluff, surprise to no one who has ever met him, and there had been a reasonable measure of certainty he'd carrying it through on that she wouldn't be able to resist rising to meet him in challenge just to prove that she wouldn't be bested. Sif, for all that she catches him by surprise when he least expects her to, does have a certain amount of predictable ticks and tells. In another, it might have been tedious and exhausting. In her? Well--
A challenge and a puzzle both, certainly, and one that Loki didn't know how to step away from even when he should.
In any case he does owe her something in way of apology for his behavior the previous night. He'd been too familiar, too brazen, too ready to throw caution to the wind and lay down that gamble and-- he'd stumbled. It happened more often than his pride would ever allow him to admit to if he could twist the perception into his favor instead, but failing that required other means of damage control. It's a different kind of gamble, one he's not entirely certain of, but it's too late to turn back now.]
And here I'd wondered if you'd leave me to wait the whole of the night.
[He says, voice even and well-humored as he steps from the shadows he finds himself at home in so often, dressed more lightly for the chill than most would considered but appearing unbothered all the same as he considers her in her cloak and the stubborn determination she wears upon her expression like armor. The smile on his mouth hitches a little wider for it, and he beckons her to follow him.] Come. We'll require a skiff.
( he steps from the darkness like he's been there all along, and while sif doesn't jump, her hand does move to the small of her back where she has a dagger hidden. he always knew how to catch her off guard and this was no exception. not for the first time, she wondered why am i here? - but she knew why. because he'd promised to make it up for her and sif, for all her experience with his lies in the past, always believed him.
(he didn't have to know that. she didn't have to share it with him. he was a liar, through and through, but she was gullible. which was worse?)
he's smiling, and she follows, though not without twisting her lips into a scowl. )
I said I would be here, didn't I? And I always keep a promise. ( unlike certain other people we might know. ) Where are you taking me?
( a boat? she wasn't sure what she'd expected when he asked to meet at the docks, but perhaps she'd been a little bit short-sighted to not see that coming. )
